A Sweet {or Salty} Summer Treat

We're enjoying the peak of watermelon/canteloupe harvest here, and every lunch and dinner is highlighted by these cool, juicy fruits!

This year I planted a couple of heirloom varieties (from seed purchased here) that have been especially fun to harvest.
The watermelon above, called Golden Midget, has a bright yellow skin when ripe and a beautiful pink flesh, which creates a most beautiful summer color combination.
The best thing about this variety is that there is no question when it's ripe, which is difficult to determine with green skinned varieties (or hard for us anyway!)

And living up to its name (even though not required to do so) this adorable watermelon was the size of a softball---notice its size compared to the spoon.

We all (chickens included) have thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of our labor---
Mr. à la parisienne prefers to add salt to his watermelon while Amelia and I prefer to enjoy their natural sweetness.

Which leads me to the question:
What is your favorite way to eat watermelon? Salty or sweet?

How beautiful! I've never seen a melon like this. I like mine cold and sweet.

Looks like like you're having a wonderful summer.

My father has always added salt to his watermelon. I like mine au naturale!

I've actually eaten it both ways...one half salt and the other half without!
Can't wait to show my Chef the link for the seeds. Those are precious watermelons.

Pretty! I love cold watermelon with a sprinkling of salt. I think the salt brings out the sweetness of the melon. :)

That is the prettiest little watermelon ever! Oh my gosh... i'm in love... a perfect size, you can tell when it's ripe, and pretty to boot. I must grow those next year. And... no salt for me!

J'adore la pastèque mais je ne connais pas cette variété-là!
Je la préfère sucrée!
Have a good evening!

Ok...I grew up having salt on my cantaloup but now I just like it with the natural sweetness but I can so understand your MRs tastebuds.
Such a pretty pretty image..love the soft colours. Hugs for a delightful thursday. xoxox

Only you would have watermelons that co-ordinate with your home so well...
such a color combo! Used to eat mine salty as a child, but it's just one more thing that I gave up for more healthy eating. Luckily, it's delicious either way!

With salt please. My Daddy always has done it this way and since he is my first love, I will do it this way.
Salt is good on watermelon!

These are so much fun - I have never seen them before. Thanks for the info on the seeds. I will have to get some for next summer. The colors are just magical, as is your blog. Susan at Romancing the Home

Hmmm... I've never really considered it! But now that I think about it, I do love melon wrapped with procuitto (sp?) so I guess it's salty for me!

Oh darling! I am SO into heirloom varieties of veggies and fruits (that's what we try to plant most of every season), so I want to thank you for sharing the link to that supplier! Also, that watermelon is adorable. So tiny (for a watermelon anyway). Sweet for me, my hubs...he loves adding salt to it. Adorable post.
