A Humbled Heart

Preface: This post is somewhat long and contains no pictures but is weighted with meaning and I do hope that when you have a few spare minutes you will read its entirety.

So many things are going on in our world lately-natural disaster after natural disaster; dismal economic situations in many countries; and here in Texas we have been plagued with drought. I've had many tender thoughts about these issues for a while and have been wanting to share these thoughts with you for a while. This post is not about fancy chandeliers, haute couture, or pretty parties. It's about being brought to my knees and being shaken-brought to the reality of what is really important. I write this post because I want all of my readers to know one very important thing about me-really the most important thing about me that goes to the core of my being.

I love to write about pretty things. I love to make pretty things, but I know that my purpose in life is not about pretty things or the pursuit of them.

It's not about where I travel, what I accomplish, who I meet. If tradegy struck tomorrow and my life on earth met its closing, my lovingly decorated home, my dried up garden, my closet full of hand-selected clothes, and my small business on Etsy would be as nothing, for I cannot take any of it with me.

It is so easy to get distracted in life to find one's mind obsessing over such trivial things, and I would never want to impart to you, my friends, that these things or accomplishments are my top priority. I'd love to say that I always have a focused heart, but the truth is I can become very distracted with worldly treasures. {Matthew 6:19-21}

I want to share with you a very powerful song that I love to sing. Although I have sung it for years, it still brings tears to my eyes as the lyrics flood over me, and, today, these words hold more meaning than ever as I survey the parched earth in Texas and as I witness my country, the United States of America struggling with mounted debt, alongside many other foreign countries.

"Gratitude" by Nichole Nordeman

Send some rain, would You send some rain?
'Cause the earth is dry and needs to drink again
And the sun is high and we are sinking in the shade
Would You send a cloud, thunder long and loud?
Let the sky grow black and send some mercy down
Surely You can see that we are thirsty and afraid
But maybe not, not today
Maybe You'll provide in other ways
And if that's the case . . .

(Chorus)

We'll give thanks to You
With gratitude
For lessons learned in how to thirst for You
How to bless the very sun that warms our face
If You never send us rain

Daily bread, give us daily bread
Bless our bodies, keep our children fed
Fill our cups, then fill them up again tonight
Wrap us up and warm us through
Tucked away beneath our sturdy roofs
Let us slumber safe from danger's view this time
Or maybe not, not today
Maybe You'll provide in other ways
And if that's the case . . .

(Chorus)

We'll give thanks to You
With gratitude
A lesson learned to hunger after You
That a starry sky offers a better view if no roof is overhead

And if we never taste that bread

Oh, the differences that often are between
What we want and what we really need

So grant us peace, Jesus, grant us peace
Move our hearts to hear a single beat
Between alibis and enemies tonight
Or maybe not, not today
Peace might be another world away
And if that's the case . . .

(Chorus)

We'll give thanks to You
With gratitude
For lessons learned in how to trust in You
That we are blessed beyond what we could ever dream
In abundance or in need
And if You never grant us peace

But Jesus, would You please . . .

Sometimes it takes drought, disasters, and debt to open our eyes to help us realize that we have had our focus wrong for so long-that we have been selfish. Who and what are we living for? Don't get me wrong, hobbies and material things are a positive thing...in moderation. They renew, accomodate, and bring joy, but they can also destroy when they become our lives, when they become all we think about. We find ourselves wanting more-unquenched, unsatisfied, envious and bitter.

Troubled times remind us that we are not promised nor entitled to live lavishly and every single thing we have is a gift from God, and if all we have in our possession is water and bread we are blessed beyond what we deserve, a difficult concept to swallow for most of us who live in abundance.

I pray that I will remember these words throughout my life as I support my husband and mentor our daughter. For me, life is about who I know and in whom I have believed and that is Jesus Christ.

Lord, would you please forgive me and my country for living so selfishly? Would you please impart wisdom to our country's leaders? Would you please send down some rain and mercy?

We are thirsty and afraid. Amen.

How true. We are so mired in our own little selves that we often forget to see the bigger picture. A daily reminder is a dear friend of mine, my age, who is slowly, agonizingly, dying. It keeps me from whining too much.

As I sit in front of the window looking at the rain that ruined my day...I will be thankful and pray for others.

Sometimes words are prettier than photos. Thanks for reminding of that....

Baby Jesus please send my dear friend Mandy some rain. She is one of the most beautiful souls on this earth. It is only water we are praying for and this will make her smile again. Please bless my friend, her husband and her precious Amelia. I will pray again tomorrow and the next day too until it rains again in Texas.
Amen.

Hello sweet Mandy, I'm so glad you posted this, it has touched me deeply and I so agree with everything you have said. I too find myself being distracted with the worldly treasures and making pretty things that I lose focus on what is really important. Thank you so much for this post, it's been such an inspiration to me!

This is a beautifully worded post. I think it is natural as we go through the ebbs and flows of life that every once in awhile we need to stop and rearrange our priorities. It's why we read scriptures over and over again. We need to be reminded of and relearn the lessons they have to teach us. We have good friends in Texas and are praying for some rain for all of you.

I, too, am distracted by earthly things, pretty things, sparkly things. But I know that these things will not last. My treasure is in Heaven. Your post is a beautiful reminder. Knowing Christ is truly all that matters.

Oh, thanks so such a wonderful and timely post. It reminds me of the little poem from my childhood:

Only one life, 'twill soon be past.
Only what's done for Christ will last.

Blessings and prayers for you, my friend.

A truly beautiful post.
Our worlds contract and expand with what we are thinking and feeling and although you often write of what influences you in the design world, anyone who comes here regularly knows instinctively that is not all you see, think or feel.
You have a lovely way of expressing yourself.

Mandy, I live in Texas too, so I know well of what you speak. I was in the hill country for a couple of weeks a few days ago and the impact of our drought was severely evident across the pastures and fallow dead fields we use to grow beautiful products of our earth. Our livestock and wildlife are stricken, as we will never understand, as we have water from our kitchen sinks. Our country? Well, as a Texan I'm sure you feel exactly as I do. We cannot forgive by re-electing those dumbasses in DC. I am volunteering for anyone who runs for President in the high hope we will only have a 1-termer in obama, who hasn't a clue how to make meaningful decisions. He does not have any experience and should never have been elected. Anyone of the other candidates would have been far better. Alas, our young, who haven't been here long enough to know it takes experience to run our government, along with sheeple who just followed blindly. I love this post. You are far gentler than I have been and I applaud you for this. Sending love from Houston...

A beautiful heartfelt post.
These are difficult times so many people struggling and sad, all over the world.
After the recent death of my Father and the many earthly pains I see things so differently now and share your views.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Mandy: I am Martha, I have followed you for quite a while by email. I am sorry to say I never write a comment. I am just happy to visit your beautiful site. You truly are amazing. Today, however, I was moved by your honestly and your love of God. What you wrote about is so true, we all seem to want more. I have been in a valley for a long time, and have just recently begun to get out. Your reminded me today, that I can't keep my faith to myself. There are ladies in blogland that so need to hear the gospel. I have been so worried about my own life, that I forgot about the other ladies, God has put in my path. Today, you ministered to me and others, I am sure. Thank you for doing what God wanted you to do. Blessings, Martha

Amen!!! You have put into words what so many of us think and feel. I believe that in the US we have gotten so use to having it all we have become blind, and now it is starting to show in the state of the economy, in the attitudes and actions of the people. I often think that the natural disasters and weather issues world wide are perhaps a sign from God to wake up and get out acts togethr.

Thank you for sharing! You bring bright spots into dark days for so many!

Julie- That's a great point. I've never thought of it that way!

Elizabeth-I agree with everything you wrote. I hope that I only contribute brightness and never darkness.

When things seem so depressing, giving glory to God is uplifting.

He creates the beauty that you love so much, the colors, textures and natural designs in nature. It inspires you to create beautiful things too. What a wonderful way to appreciate Him!

What a wonderful post and so not PC - which makes it al the better :-) I love that it is written with your soul and no photo could have made it better. Over the years, I have found that I enjoy less and less "stuff" and am very content just enjoying other peoples' "stuff." I enjoy adventures and experiences because those are memories in the making that when older, they will always be with me.

Thank you for the reminder. And as a Texan who no longer lives in Texas, but clearly remembers the droughts, the water shortages, no longer watering the lawns, and the grass fires on the highways, I hope rain is at your doorstep soon!

God has a plan, and we will be in on it at the perfect moment.

Big hug
Elizabeth :-)
