Why don't women dress like this anymore? I realize styles evolve and bits and pieces of older trends pop up in today's fashion, but I would love to dress like these ladies. I try to find pieces that evoke that vintage feeling, but would I get away with wearing this type of hat that the woman is sporting below? Yeah, I could wear it in Texas, in the country, but cowboy hats and baseball caps are the only hats on women around here. When did baseball caps on women replace beautifully structured hats? When did the daily wear of windpants, hoodies, and tennis shoes replace pleated, floral dresses, tailored peacoats, and leather pumps? I long to dress like a woman- a woman with vivacity, personality, and modesty. Even my husband tells me that he wishes that I would wear dresses more often.
There was a time when women wore darker lipstick rather than nude shaded gloss or chapstick! Do you dare wear a rich shade of crimson?
And gloves... are they an extinct accessory?

Today I will be attending an outdoor wedding, and I would love to wear a dress like this, of course another color would more socially appropriate. Besides vintage shops and expensive boutiques, where would an oridanary gal find such a dress? Not at JC Penny's!

You pull this off better than you give yourself credit for! (Sorry for that preposition hanging off the end of my sentence...)
I think you could easily pull that off. What about vintage consignment shops where they're sure to have Valentino's and Dior's from the 50's? I know there are a bunch in NYC. Try Tatiana. Take pics!
I put red gloss on my lips for the out door wedding and my husband told me my lips were too bright and too red. I agree elegance is lost but I would have no idea where to start shopping for anything like the above. I love the hats! Can you imagine the looks I would get? I remember only one lady who wore hats to church services. Effie Gober. You would have loved her.
I really agree with your comments on this subject and the photos are so pretty. I was in TJ Maxx today and a woman came strolling by pushing a shopping cart and she was wearing the most dramatic, large, ethereal hat. I later figured out she was walking over to show her friend the hat she found for sale, but she looked stunning in it. At first I was startled because you just don't see it often, but it was a great look. I adore crimson lipstick! I posted about this the other day. I really like your blog. I am originally from TX and my family is still there so I love that state!

Love this style ! It is so glamour!
I love to wear hats
Being a vintage-style model I collect vintage hats, gloves and dresses. I am proud to say I do wear them all, including the red lipstick on a daily basis. It makes me feel so pretty and feminine! I love it :)
I totally agree! Back when Cashmere Mofia was still on the air, they brought back over the top fashion with accessories, AND gloves! I think they can be incorporated into life and made into a modern look. I too feel that ribbons, corsets, frills and luxe fabrics and formal attire should be a part of life, which is one of the reasons I wanted a Federal style home with formal rooms... I want to bring back some of these cultural wonders!
I also agree with you.. I do wear dark whipped berry lipsticks, and as soon as the rest of the baby weight is off I do plan to wear my sleeveless sheath dresses much more frequently on a daily basis... feminine.. lovely...
speaking of dresses, I have to admit I am quite fond of some of the "A Heart in Provence" dresses.. could picture myself out gardening in some of those.
I am proud to say I sometimes put on my richest shade of red lipstick and all wear it all day ( even if just at home doing laundry ) ... it makes everything much better ! Love your blog ... so glad you found me because it made me find you !

Beautiful post and a beautiful blog~~while I have just recently started wearing some of my grandmothers amazing vintage hats I inherited, I am a proud wearer of crimson lipstick, although, like my parfum, I cannot dare share my shade!

Oh I so am with you on this! I adore such elegant apparel. Back then, clothes were made not with mass manufacture in mind, but to flatter the female form in all it's beauty.
Red lipstick is insanely gorgeous. I insisted on wearing the purest 1930 style Hollywood glamour red (a Chanel number, as it happens) on my wedding day, and I adored it! I had finger curl hair, a 1930's inspired silk gown (miles of silk charmeusse) and felt incredible. You would look amazing in any of the ensembles you have posted photographs of above, the bottom dress from the 1953 Vogue plate is incredibly beautiful and just the style I would like to wear myself. And gloves are indeed, a very elegant necessity :)
I hope you find your beautiful wedding outfit,
Much love xXx
Oh my I would love to go back to those romantic days of "chic" dressing. I was a late life baby and had my mom's aunts clothes to wear for tea parties with my dolls...hats, gloves, stoles and I loved it. I was a tomboy with 5 brothes, so being a girly girl occasionally and on Sundays were my favorite days. sigh....
